Their contributions made a real difference in our community. Because of their support, Sampson County now has a backup communications system capable of functioning when local power is out, and the internet and cell towers are down. This capability is housed at the Emergency Management Center and is designed to provide communication with the county’s emergency shelters including portable communications to allow emergency management staff to move around the county. Additionally, one of the radio systems provides the capability of communicating with locations outside the disaster zone to advise them of our situation and needs as well as passing messages to family and loved ones. Sampson County is 1 of approximately 25 counties in the state to have this type of backup plan.
